Well worth a stop

Portel Castle is on the higher part of town, and on a special lookout you can see the white houses and the blue sky. In the distance we could see the fields, it's a special place, representing the symbolic images of the Alentejo. It's an unfrequented place, well worth a stop if you are driving. Free admission.

Portel blottit ses maisons bien blanchies au pied d'un château médiéval en pierres sombres. Le château dont les murailles ont savamment été restaurées pour en faire une attraction touristique de l'arrière-pays de la province d'Evora, est un bel exemple de l'architecture militaire du 13ème siècle. Le donjon est postérieur : débuté au 14ème siècle, il ne fut terminé qu'au 16ème. En tout cas le château donne un cachet certain au bourg. Portel dans la petite Serra qui lui a donné son nom (point culminant 418 mètres) offre une apparence de calme mais la vie n'est pas sans labeur sous ce ciel méditerranéen où l'on produit une huile d'olive de qualité.

Portel houses snuggled well bleached at the foot of a medieval castle in the dark stones. The castle whose walls have cleverly t RESTORED into a tourist attraction of the hinterland of the province of Evora, is a fine example of military architecture of the 13th century. The dungeon is postrieur: beginning at 14ME century, it was not finished at 16ME. Anyway the castle gives a certain character to the town. Portel in the small Serra has given it its name (highest point 418 meters) offers a calm appearance but life is not without toil under this sky mditerranen o it produces a quality olive oil.
