The Orkney Islands
The Orkney Islands are accessible from three ports: Aberdeen (passengers and vehicles, less desirable as it is the longest, about 6 hours); John O'Groats (passenger only catamaran, the shortest, about 45 minutes) or Scrabster (passengers and vehicles, most recommendable for price, landscapes and ferry frequency - 3/day going/return, 1.5 hours). Scrabster Harbour has long had an importance as the largest harbour in Northern of Scotland's coastal zone, for fishing and transport. Located in Thurso Bay about 3 miles east of the center. The ferry terminal is in the harbor, advanced online booking is recommended (Northlink Ferries) although usually there is room even for last minute arrivals.
This company provided a wealth of information on the Orkney Islands and services offered. Our experience with it has been much better than, for example, with P&O and SeaFrance, which usually take the step from France to England. Undoubtedly the most convenient port if you want to take your own vehicle to Orkney, although it is relevant to point out that there are organized day tours, by bus, from John O'Groats.
