The Second Port of Israel
The city of Ashdod is found in the Southern District of Israel. In the last decade it has grown dynamically, after receiving more new immigrants than any other city in Israel. About 70,000 newcomers, mostly from the former Soviet Union, have increased the population of the city by more than 220,000 inhabitants. The new part of Ashdod was established in 1956 (and received municipal status 12 years later) and is the second deepest harbour in Israel, after Haifa.
