Pope Pius IX Statue

This statue is in a broad esplanade in Montanha da Penha and represents Pope Pius IX, who in 1873 granted a plenary indulgence to all pilgrim devotees of the Virgen del Carmen de Penha, following this the mass pilgrimages to this mountain and its sanctuary began. This sculpture is carved in white stone and placed on a sturdy and huge granite pedestal. Next to it is a viewpoint.
