1 review of Pontic Tombs

Tombs that offer incredible scenery

One of the wonders to be found in the lovely city of Amasya, in central Anatolia, are the Pontic tombs. These tombs carved into the rock date back to the 4th century BC. These tombs were used to venerate the Pontic kings and today we can find 18 empty graves. The location of these structures is great, since they are in a rock of a mountain that seems to protect the city. In order to get to the graves one has to climb steep stairs departing from Amasya. There are the lockers and there are multiple paths. If we turn to the left we can see a couple of rock-cut tombs with amazing beauty. We wonder how they could do this so many years ago.

If we take the path out and come to the remains of the palace of the maids. This is the palace where the Kings of Pontus and later the Ottoman kings took residence. It is next to a cliff and offers incredible views,, if we enter a hole in the wall we can get to another area where there are more graves and where you can also enjoy beautiful scenery. Of the 18 tombs there stands 1 that is well separated from the rest. It is named the Cave of the mirror and is more striking than the rest because it seems that was later used as a chapel by the Byzantines, as it houses many frescoes, also.
