Plaza San Fernando O de la Constitución

This square was originally named San Fernando de Maldonado and has been known as a historical monument since 1975. Its marble fountain center was the Plaza Matriz in colonial times. It was built in 1726 and subsequently amended in 1855 and 2010. The sidewalks are concrete and black granite, the lights are in column and on the street. There are green spaces with banana and palm trees. There are still some old trees in the center as well as a large water fountain and on diagonal covered with large trees. Looking southwest is the statue of José Gervasio Artigas, a hero of Uruguay's independence. The surrounding institutional buildings are strong symbolically such as the Cathedral, the Cabildo, the Club Uruguay and large hotels and shops.
