From Geneva's shopping take the famous Rue de la Corraterie and arrive at the Place Neuve. This square (New Square), is the cultural epicenter of Geneva, the Rath Museum (1826), the Conservatory of Music (1858) and the Grand Theatre (opera, 1879) are all in this historic square. The statue in the center represents the Geneva General Guillaume-Henri Dufour, a national hero and prime architect of the geographical map of Switzerland. Place Neuve is on one side of the old town of Geneva, through the Parc des Bastions (the park surrounding the University), and on the other side, the square of Plainpalais
