The first job the town hall gave Gaudí

Excellent

In one of Barcelona’s emblematic plazas lies one of Gaudi’s first works, which goes highly unnoticed: the streetlights or streetlamps! After completing these, Gaudí found more work, like the renovation of the Consell de Cent (Council of One Hundred) chamber that few are familiar with, among others.

Yes, you are a curious traveler like me, so try to locate these beautiful streetlamps of almost martian-like design in the middle of the Plaza Real. The plaza presents a unique spot, full of life with countless restaurants, bars, terraces and even a beautiful fountain in the center. However, in my opinion, the most impressive sites are the incredible streetlamps which they later replicated in another of Barcelona’s interesting plaza, the Plaza del Palau. The two plazas are not very far from each other and can make for an interesting walk to see these modern designs.

Always something happening

A legendary square in the heart of Barcelona. With palm trees and cafés on all sides, Plaza Real is a very pleasant square to relax in after visiting the Gothic neighborhood around it.

It is about a hundred meters away from Las Ramblas. You can still hear the noises, you see the people passing by, you look at the street artists imitating football stars or doing magic tricks to make a living during a Catalan summer.

It is squared and the corners get packed with people, according to the direction of the sun at the hottest time of the day. Once the sun sets, it gets lively into the late hours of the night.

The heart of the Gothic Quarter

One of the must-see sights when you go to Barcelona is Plaza Real. There are many reasons for this, but one of them is its location, just a few meters away from la Rambla. This rectangular platform serves as a meeting point and break area for many people, for its central location and its popularity.

In the center there is the fountain called Tres Gracias, where many take a break after a good day, walk around, or have a drink to warm their body up before a nice party in one of neighboring clubs and bars.

The terraces around the square are perfect for a dinner in the pure style of traditional middle-aged tourism. The best is to use the square as a meeting point or a pretext to get to know people, especially at night. It is decorated by real palm trees giving a tropical aspect, and it has streetlights designed by Gaudí.

Meeting point

It is one of the most original and pictorial spots of Barcelona. Of squared shape and surrounded by buildings with porches, this square is a meeting point for artists and bohemians. Some famous Catalan singer-songwriters even live in some of the flats on the square.

The square has many aspects we should highlight:

- The touristic aspect. There are all types of bars and restaurants. One of them in particular, the Mamasita chain, has become a typical picture of the place because of the constant line there is to get in.

- Then it is also a concentration point for tramps and beggars.
