Quality pizza in Naples

This is a restaurant chain that has been opening franchises, first throughout Italy and then internationally, but the Fratelli La Bufala brand is closely linked to the Naples area, specifically Aversa, near Caserta. It's well worth reading the history on the restaurant's website, which explains all about the family and their origins and success. The head of the family was a producer of mozzarella cheese. As I said, despite having branches in cities like Barcelona, Madrid, London, Brussels, New York, etc, the real essence of these restaurants can only be captured in Naples, where they have multiple locations.

One of the most iconic is in the old cobbled Via Medina, close to the port and the old part of the city. From the outside it's a modest place, but the buffalo horns will catch your eye. The cook inside is very welcoming and happy to let you photograph the traditional pizza oven. After climbing some stairs, you enter the restaurant itself, which is big and brightly coloured. As for the food, the menu of course offers plenty of pasta dishes, pizzas and calzones. I specifically opted for one of the house specialties, the 'Corno di Bufala', which as you can see in the photos, is a kind of calzone, stuffed with a lot of buffalo mozzarella, which is placed above your choice of ingredients, in this case, arugula and prosciutto.

Honestly, although it looked delicious, I expected more from this house specialty. The cheese is very rich, but by the end, it was quite dry and hard to finish. I was expecting it to be juicier. I think my companions' pizzas were a better choice. In short, despite being a franchise, the branch of Fratelli La Bufala located in Via Medina continues to be a very good option to enjoy Italian fine dining, especially good pasta and pizza cooked in a stone oven. The pizzas are fairly cheap, although drinks are quite expensive.
