Gorgonita
XVI century pillory
This Pelourinho (or pillory) represents the power of the autonomy of the council and has been declared a National Monument in Portugal. It's on one end of Plaza de Almada, almost opposite the Town Hall. It's made of stone, has a square base placed on a staircase of 4 steps, on which stands a column completed in a sphere. This area dates back to the XVI century and is the emblem of the Portuguese king Manuel I. The other components are a result of reconstruction in 1854.
