Pelourinho o Picota

1 review of Pelourinho o Picota

Symbol of real power

It is an ornamental stone column commissioned by the Portuguese King Manuel I, whose monarchical symbols appear in the decoration of the shaft and capital. It is topped with an iron cross. This type of monuments, very frequent in the Portuguese municipalities, symbolized the municipal or royal power, and they were placed in a public place, where justice and punishment were given to the delinquents.
