puede presumir de tener en sus tierras uno de los tesoros más grandes que cualquier pueblo quisiera tener, el descubrimiento de sus antepasados. A tan sólo unos pocos kilómetros se han hallado restos arqueológicos, algunos de ellos con más de 3.500 años de antigüedad, que atestiguan que hubo un asentamiento humano en este lugar al menos desde el II milenio a. C hasta el s. XVI. Gracias a las excavaciones que se han llevado a cabo recientemente en esta zona se ha descubierto todo un asentamiento – posiblemente la Ituci Virtus Lulia citada por Plinio-, con su puerta de acceso a la ciudad, su foro, el castillo medieval, un santuario, e incluso un mercado romano, (uno de los escasos ejemplos de este tipo de edificios que se conocen en la Península Ibérica). La mayoría de las piezas encontradas en Torreparedones se pueden ver en el Museo Histórico y Arqueológico Municipal, un edificio construido en el s. XVIII como almacén de grano y semillas y como bodega de aceite, que hoy se ha rehabilitado y conserva piezas tan impresionantes como los exvotos encontrados cerca del santuario de Torreparedones, y que esculpidas en piedra representan mujeres embarazadas implorando “un parto sin problemas”, el busto acéfalo tallado en mármol de un emperador romano, o estatuas zoomórficas, entre otras piezas.

La historia de Baena incluye signos e incertidumbres que guían la búsqueda de una identidad propia por parte de sus habitantes e invita a la visita a aquellos que gustan de dejarse llevar por el misterio y la capacidad de sorpresa. Uno de ellos es el nombre del principal enclave histórico habitado en el espacio rural del municipio, la ciudad que conocemos como Torreparedones, ibera y romana primero, enclave militar después durante el Medievo y redescubierta en las recientes excavaciones. El lugar conocido como Torreparedones o Torre de las Vírgenes está ubicado en plena campiña cordobesa, entre los ríos Guadalquivir al norte y el Guadajoz al sur, en el límite septentrional de los términos municipales de Baena y Castro del Río. Su situación topográfica, sobre una de las cotas más elevadas de la zona (579.60 m.s.n.m.) lo convierten en el techo de la Campiña. Estuvo habitado al menos durante 3.500 años, desde la Edad del Cobre hasta la Baja Edad Media. En las épocas ibérica y romana Torreparedones alcanzó su máximo esplendor contando, ya desde el siglo VI a.C., de una potente muralla, reforzada con torres, que rodeaba un espacio de 10,5 Ha.
