Parish of Our Lady of the Assumption Church
To get to this beautiful village, you have to travel on the N-340 / A7, take exit 277: Algarrobo / Caleta de Velez and then go up the mountains on the A-7206, from Algarrobo and Sayalonga. Competa is located about 16 kilometers from the coast. When we arrived in Competa, we found a beautiful village known for its famous sweet wine. Competa has Roman origins, and their livelihood has always been agriculture, including cultivation of the vine, olive, fig, and mulberry trees. One of the oldest monuments in Competa is the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, dating from the end of the century with a tower 30 meters high, which was built in 1505 by Isabella la Catolica.
An earthquake destroyed it but it was later rebuilt. On the altar there is an Assumption, painted by Francisco Hernández in 1972. The mural on the font is the chapel of St. Sebastian, patron of construction.
