Notre Dame de la Bidassoa

4 reviews of Notre Dame de la Bidassoa

typical Basque church

Located in the heart of the city, this typical Basque church was destroyed and rebuilt between the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The white exterior clashes with the red altar and ceiling inside. The interior is beautiful with its stained glass windows, wooden gallery traditional of Basque churches, wooden statues and a crucifix dating back to the thirteenth century. Concerts are often organized here. The Cyclic Cross on the outside is also quite mysterious. It's declared a National Monument, with 4 different images on its pedestal: Http :/ /'https://www.noticiasdegipuzkoa.com/ediciones/2007/02/11/sociedad/gipuzkoa' / hendaia.Php

Rich in history

Located in the center of the town of Hendaye, right in the middle of the streets is this wonderful sixteenth century church. Typical of a church in the Basque Country, its architecture is constructed in the colors of the region: the facade is white and it has red roof ... Also rich in history, it has been destroyed numerous times during the wars with Spain between 1793 and 1813. Below, only a short distance away, is the charming neighborhood of Caneta, in which you can enjoy sardines. Just opposite, Spain! Unfortunately, when we arrived at the church its doors were closed, which was a shame, for we had been told that treasures were inside, including a magnificent crucifix.
