4 reviews of Parc National de la Guadeloupe

A UNESCO Biosphere Nature Reserve

Virtually the entire central part of the island of Basse-Terre is a natural park and was declared a Biosphere Nature Reserve by UNESCO in 1992. It is the first French National Park to be declared in a tropical environment (created in 1989), and at 17,400 acres it is the largest of the Lesser Antilles. The central area consists of a bamboo and mahogany rainforest, in which there are 811 species of flowers and 274 ferns, and 100 species of orchids (5 of which are endemic). Also 33 species of birds, 11 species of bats, 17 species of mammals (including manatees) and frogs and bats live here. Among the leafy and lush vegetation you can find multiple waterfalls.

The coastal zone consists of mangroves. The park offers 300 km of marked trails ideal for hiking and climbing. The main routes are: * Traver route (which lasts around 17 Km): The most beautiful places to visit are The Mamelles (Petit-Bourg mountain is 716 m high and Pigeon mountain, is 769 m high, and zoo), the Cascade aux écrevisses, and the Maison de la Forêt (where you will find an interpretation center). * Les Chutes de la Rivière du Grand Carbet has three waterfalls rising to heights of 125, 110 and 20 metres respectively. * La Soufrière (an active volcano reaching 1467 m altitude that emits sulphurous vapours) and Les Bains Jaunes, where you can bath in water at a very pleasant temperature of 26 ° C.
