Orvieto Cathedral

La città di Orvieto, posta su di un'altura di tufo, è dominata dalla mole del Duomo. Capolavoro del gotico italiano, il Duomo comincia ad essere costrito nel 1290 e la sua costruzione impiegò in tutto circa tre secoli. I lavori furono assegnati inizialmente a Fra Bevignate e poi a Lorenzo Maitani, autore della facciata. Il rosone centrale della facciata è ideato da Andrea Orcagna ed è circondato dalle statue di 12 profeti e dei 12 apostoli. La base della facciata si presenta come una fascia ondulata dagli elementi decorativi: Bassorilievi, pilastri e portali. Salendo, la facciata diventa più leggera ed ospita decorazioni slanciate e dipinte con elementi tipicamente medievali come il fondo oro. L'interno del Duomo di Orvieto è diviso in 3 navate ed è decorato, sia sulle pareti che sulle colonne, a righe alternate di basalto blu e calcare bianco; la decorazione interna riprende quella dell'esterno. Il soffitto ripropone la stessa alternanza delle pareti grazie alle capriate dipinte. La Cappella del Corporale conserva il Reliquiario d'argento di Ugolino di Vieri, raffigurante il Miracolo di Bolsena. Nelle altre cappelle trovano posto gli affreschi di Luca Signorelli, tra cui il famoso "I fatti dell'Anticristo", dove il Maligno si presenta sotto le sembianze di Gesù.

The city of Orvieto, situated on a high plateau, is dominated by the Cathedral. A masterpiece of Italian Gothic style, the cathedral began to be costrito in 1290 and its construction took around three centuries. The work was initially assigned to Fra Bevignate and then to Lorenzo Maitani, author of the facade. The central rose window of the facade is designed by Andrea Orcagna and is surrounded by 12 statues of the 12 apostles and prophets. The base of the facade looks like a strip corrugated decorative elements: Bas-reliefs, columns and portals. Going up, the facade becomes lighter and more slender and painted home decor with traditional medieval as the gold background.

Perched atop the hill of Orvieto, the Gothic cathedral (1290-1330), fascinates. Il Duomo è una delle più significative creazioni dell'architettura gotica italiana, la facciata ha la forma di un grazioso trittico impreziosito da mosaici rifatti nel '600 e nel '700. Il portale è ampio e profondo, il rosone centrale è di notevole bellezza, i quattro pilastri tra i portali hanno rilievi rappresentanti storie del vecchio e nuovo testamento, nella lunetta del portale mediano una Madonna marmorea portata da angeli, sui fianchi cappellette semicircolari si aprono su gotici portali. Nell'interno ci sono tre navate su pilastri cilindrici di carattere romanico. Nel transetto, ai lati del presbiterio, due altari del '500, a destra quello dei Magi, sull'altare maggiore un Crocifisso di mirabile bellezza. In fondo alla chiesa una grande vetrata del 1325, in fondo al braccio destro del transetto si apre la cappella Nuova o della Madonna di San Brizio piena degli affreschi del Signorelli. All'altare un gotico tabernacolo marmoreo che racchiude il corporale macchiato di sangue stillato dall'Ostia durante una messa a Bolsena nel 1263 celebrata da un prete boemo dubbioso. Il miracolo diede origine alla festa del Corpus Domini.

The Cathedral is one of the most significant creations of Italian Gothic architecture, the facade has the shape of a lovely triptych embellished with mosaics redone in the '600 and '700. The portal is broad and deep, the central rosette is of great beauty, the four pillars of the portals have reliefs representing stories from the Old and New Testament, in the lunette of the portal with a marble Madonna carried by angels on the sides semicircular chapels open on Gothic portals. Inside there are three naves of Romanesque cylindrical pillars of character. In the transept, the sides of the chancel of the '500 two altars, one to the right of the Magi, a crucifix on the main altar of wondrous beauty. At the bottom of a large glass window to the church in 1325, at the end of the south transept is the Chapel of Our Lady of New or San Brizio full of frescoes by Signorelli. Gothic altar a marble tabernacle that contains the body stained with blood oozed from the Host during a Mass at Bolsena in 1263, celebrated by a Bohemian priest doubtfully. The miracle gave rise to the feast of Corpus Christi.

Nulla in particolare..... Bella l'atmosfera che si crea ad Orvieto.... È come fare un tuffo a capofitto nel passato...... Non mi sarei meravigliato di veder sbucare da un angolo qualche cavaliere in armatura..... :)

El duomo de Orvieto es el más atrevido que conozco en cuanto a la policromía de su fachada, y la riqueza de su interior; es obligatorio conocerlo.
