China stopped in time
Pingyao is a legendary Chinese city founded in the 14th century and has managed to remain intact, a miracle in the 21st century China in which the heritage of the country is seriously threatened by unstoppable economic development. Pingyao is in Shanxi Province, not far from Beijing and a nice train ride from the capital. Walking through its streets is like going back to the Ming and Qing periods. The Old Town maintains much of its original architecture, providentially contained within 6 km of wall with guard towers, which contain and delimit the new city Pingyao, which is a horror! The historic center was declared a World Heritage Site in 1997.
