Abandoned after the last earthquake
We visited the old cemetery surrounding the church and were curious to see the crosses that dotted the open field on mounds of earth. Some mounds had 4 crosses which meant that the tomb contained 4 bodies. Some mounds had four sticks at its vertices and these were wrapped round the grave, this meant that the body resting there was someone respectable. The old church was abandoned when the last earthquake partially destroyed it (according to Chamula a temple that doesn't have the ability to protect itself from a natural disaster isn't worth worshiping in so the best punishment is to leave it and let it slide into oblivion).
Now there are some ruins in fairly good condition. In the new church we saw Eight Saints stacked next to each other without windows to protect them, these are of the saints of the old church who fell in the earthquake and are here in this way as punishment for not having been protected.
