Haggling is an art

Many people come to Varanasi , or Benares, believing that everything in the Indian city goes through its ghats on the Ganges, or 'Ganga'. In some ways they have a point: The sacred river and everything that happens in its banks holds overwhelming power. But Varanasi has a lot more to discover. This city, whose age is uncertain, has an old, engaging and vital Bazaar that seems to be open continuously. Getting lost in its narrow streets among huge sacred cows, a lot of dirt, kids, rickshaws, motorcycles and a crowd that does not stop is an unforgettable adventure.

The little shops sell everything you could imagine and more, because there are thousands of strange things that you don't know what they are. The owners of the tiny dark sucuchos provide more varied trade. There are cheese makers, bakers, millers and preserve makers, dairy ('curd' or yogourt) being prepared on the spot, booksellers, cobblers, tea stalls, incredible fabric, religious objects, jewellery, and spices. Like most parts in India, shopping in the Old Bazaar is a religious experience. Don't forget that here haggling is an art, or a science.
