Ohrid Ancient Theatre
The Ancient Theatre of Ohrid originally hails from the Hellenistic period, in the third century BC. It is the only country where one can find an authentic Hellenistic theater. Performances such as gladiator contests took place here after the Roman conquest of the city. The theater was discovered in 1935 by the archaeologist Nikola Serbian Vulic. Excavations continued from 1959 to 1962 by the archaeologist Vasil Lahtov and from 1977 to 1984 by the archeologist Vlado Malenko. The theater was finally fully excavated in 2005. During the summer you can enjoy performances, concerts and other events her, as part of the wonderful Ohrid Summer Festival which is held every year in mid-July to mid-August.
