Odeon of Agrippa

The Odeon was an indoor concert hall measuring 51 x 43 meters and with a ceiling 25 meters long. The building could accommodate about 1000 spectators seated in 19 rows of benches surrounding the marble stage. Two doors allowed entrance to the Odeon, one in the north for artists and one in the south for spectators. Around 150 AD the roof collapsed and the structure had to be rebuilt. During this reconstruction, large statues were added to the facade. The main function of the Odeon in the second century AD was as a reading room, which explains the presence of several statues of philosophers. In the first century AD 267, the Odeon was reduced again to ruin after the invasion.
