Obelisco alle tredici vittime

L'obelisco dedicato alle 13 vittime dimenticate si trova su un lato della piazza omonima. Fino a qualche tempo fa, l'obelisco si trovava invece al centro della piazza, ma fu sostituito da un monumento moderno dedicato alle vittime degli omicidi di mafia. L'obelisco, realizzato dallo scultore Salvatore Valenti, fu eretto nel 1883 ed è dedicato alle 13 vittime della Rivolta della Gancia. Il 14 aprile 1860 Palermo fu lo scenario di uno dei più importanti episodi della rivoluzione garibaldina. Quel giorno, infatti, un gruppo di ribelli, tra cui spiccava la figura di Francesco Riso, decise di insorgere. Ma i soldati riuscirono a soffocare l'insurrezione: tra i ribelli vi furono venti vittime, tra cui lo stesso Francesco Riso che morì subito dopo in ospedale. Altri 13 uomini furono invece arrestati. Per timore che la rivolta potesse ripetersi, venne presa la decisione di fucilarli. Ciò avvenne proprio nella Piazza oggi intitolata alle XIII vittime. Sulla base dell'obelisco si possono leggere ancora oggi i nomi dei 13 martiri.
