5 reviews of Ninna-ji Temple

A World Heritage Site

The Ninna-ji is a Buddhist temple of the Shingon school located in the northwest of the city of Kyoto, about 20minutes walk from Kinkaku-ji. It was built in the early Heian period in 886 and is a UNESCO world heritage site. Its construction was ordered by the emperor Koko to spread the teaching of Buddhism, but he died before it was finished. From 888 to 1869, it was tradition for emperors to send their non-firstborn children here to become priests. In 1467, the temple was destroyed by fire during the Onin wars, and it was rebuilt 150 years later. What we see now is the result of the reconstruction.
