Níjar
Nijar is one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. Located in Almeria, in the southeast of Spain. It boasts the great Natural Park Cabo de Gata and has a long tradition of crafts, like pottery and rugs. Nijar pottery is the best example of the persistence of the Arabic culture through the centuries. Similarities in processing and decoration leave no doubt of this fact. At present there are some ceramic workshops in the lower part of town. The Watchtower is a hill with a magnificent view over the mountains, orchards and the village of Nijar. In the distance you can see the mountains of Cabo de Gata and the Mediterranean.
The Jarapa is a blanket of various sizes made from cotton and woven with strips of fabric scraps obtained from used clothing. Today the rugs are generally used as carpets but in earlier times they were used to protect mattresses from friction of the mattress and even in the olive groves for the olive harvest. The word "rag" is derived from the word "Jarapa".
