Ngwe Saung Elephants Camp
30 minutes from Ngwe Saung, through the devastation of Pathein road landscape, there is a sign which announces "Elephant Camp". Entrance to the camp is $5 per person. Riding an elephant $5. This money is well spent. And here perhaps lies the real interest of this place. Because there is a college entrance. You have to come and contribute in some way to help alleviate the plight of these people. Visiting the elephant camp can be depressing, but helping children in this school and learning about one of the many sad realities of the country (poverty and poor access to education) is important. In this case it is the children of logging families displaced by greedy commercial interests such as rubber companies.
