Newark Castle
This small castle is located in Port Glasgow (not to be confused with the city of Glasgow) on the southern shore of the estuary of the River Clyde. Built in the early fifteenth century in a Scottish baronial style by George Maxwell (Finlanstone Baron), the castle is best known for the cruelties of its next owner, Patrick Maxwell, a bloody baron who did not hesitate to end the life of who opposed his wishes, famously murdering his own wife after bearing him 16 children. But this "good man" enjoyed the favor of King James and was therefore able to extend the castle. The castle is in very good condition with its external structure largely intact and is often used by the wealthy families in the area to celebrate weddings.
