Local cuisine in New York
The New York Wine and Culinary Center is proof that American cuisine is much more than just fast food and that New York is much more than just a busy city. Actually, the state has spectacular landscapes full of lakes, vineyards, and mountains which explode with color in autumn. We began our cultural and culinary journey through New York at the New York Wine & Culinary Center located in Canandaigua near the lake. It's a place where you can attend cooking classes and wine tastings, celebrate events, shop for local products, or taste a number of dishes at the Upstairs Bistro restaurant.
The prices are affordable, considering the good service and quality of food (the most expensive dish was $26.00).
For example, salads and sandwiches were around $12.00 and the desserts around $7.00, not including tip. You can also ask that your meal be paired with wines or, interestingly, with beers from one of New York's many regional micro-breweries. I had a Syracuse Pale Ale and we tasted a variety of dishes including grilled sirloin with bacon and chive potato dumplings, seasonal vegetables, and wine sauce; pan-seared salmon and pasta tossed with broccoli, mushrooms and roasted red bell peppers in a dill cream sauce; pan-seared diver scallops, polenta, and sautéed beet greens in a whole-grain mustard and bacon vinaigrette; grilled pork chops with apple-sweet potato mash, brussel sprouts, and apple cider jus; dark chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream and seasonal compote; pumpkin cheesecake with candied pecans; and chocolate cake with cinnamon mascarpone and espresso.
