New town helping out locals
New Matmata is the only town of the region of El Dahar, where some 18,000 inhabitants live. It was created in 1976 with the aim of improving the living conditions of the Berbers who lived in so-called "cave houses" of Old Matmata (located 15 km south), creating an urban structure and housing for poor irrigation infrastructure surrounding fields of cereal crops.
