Esta zona rural de la comarca del Alto Deba se enclava en la parte alta de la cabecera del río Deba, una zona de pastos verdes, con suaves pendientes, ubicada bajo la atenta mirada del monte Kurutzeberri, una montaña rocosa muy conocida de más de 1100 metros de altitud. Este barrio pertenece al municipio de Eskoriatza, pero curiosamente, el acceso por carretera más típico se realiza desde la vecina localidad de Aretxabaleta, desde donde en cuestión de 4-5 kilómetro se salva un desnivel bastante considerable. El barrio como tal nace como surgían antes los barrios por estos lares, es decir, en una zona rural, se construía una iglesia y a su alrededor se construían casas, bueno, más bien caseríos, dando lugar al concepto de "anteiglesia", que a día de hoy se puede traducir como "barrio" o "barrio rural". De hecho, al barro de Mendiola se le conoce también como Anteiglesia de Mendiola. El barrio consta actualmente de una curiosa y pulcra iglesia, con una esbelta torre de campanario, bien cuidada por los vecinos de la zona, construída en honor a San Juan Bautista, no siempre abierta, y alrededor de la cual se han construido 2 caseríos, uno de ellos literalmente pegado a ella, como si fuese una continuación de los extramuros. Desde la parte de atrás de la iglesia, en una zona porticada, se divisa el cercano [poi=20632]embalse de Urkulu[/poi]. Esta es la zona o núcleo principal del barrio, el punto final de la carretera asfaltada, pero lógicamente, antes de llegar a este punto cuenta con otros núcleos y caseríos desperdigados en estas faldas verdes tan bonitas, tan características de Euskadi. Adicionalmente, el barrio de Mendiola es muy conocido en la zona por el asador del mismo nombre, el [poi=621101]Asador Mendiola[/poi], que se sitúa una centena de metros antes del núcleo principal, un sitio al que acude mucha gente del valle a comer, sobre todo el fin de semana. Esta zona y barrio es también punto de partida de numerosas excursiones de senderismo, aunque la más típica, es la ascensión al monte Kurutzeberri, un clásico de la comarca del Alto Deba. Destacar del barrio la casa situada al lado de la iglesia, un antiguo caserío que ha sido reformado y ha quedado precioso, de un blanco inmaculado, luminoso a más no poder; puertas y detalles característicos de los caseríos vascos, y como no, el escudo con los nombres de las familias que allí habitan, ¡ya me gustaría tener uno así a mí! Otro dato curioso del barrio es que dispone de un pequeño cementerio, situado justo debajo de la mole rocosa del monte Kurutzeberri, a buen seguro los difuntos están más que bien protegidos. Por último, resaltar las vistas que hay desde este barrio hacia el Valle del Deba y montañas situadas enfrente como Udalaitz y Anboto, panorámicas directas tras descender con los ojos y los sentidos por los suaves prados verdes de la zona. De hecho, bien a la bajada o a la subida de este barrio, tanto si vais en coche como a pie, aconsejo parar para admirar el paisaje que rodea al barrio de Mendiola, en todas las direcciones, ni Heidi tenía tanto verde alrededor :D.
