Una volta era un cantiere navale in rovina, poi una comunità artistica sponsorizzata dalla città ha preso possessesso di un vecchio magazzino e lo ha trasformato in un centro della cultura undeground. L'emittente televisiva Mtv ha ritenuto la zona così innovativa che a sua volta ha ristrutturato un capannone per farne la sua sede europea. Altri capannoni sono stati ristrutturati e ospitano oggi alcune aziende, mentre alcuni sono in fase di ristrutturazione. Quelli che assomigliano a cubi accatastati e colorati sono alcuni depositi trasformati in alloggi popolari. Il tutto ha un qualcosa di apocalittico ma è un aspetto di Amsterdam che vale la pena conoscere per avere un'idea più completa delle tante facce di questa città. Per arrivarci si prende un traghetto gratuito che salpa circa ogni mezz'ora da una piattaforma dietro la stazione centrale. La traversata dura 15 minuti e si può caricare a bordo anche la bicicletta.

To get there you take a free ferry that sails about every half hour from a platform behind the central station. The crossing takes 15 minutes and you can also load your bike on board.
