ANADEL
Nazareth
Nazareth is a town of about 40,000 people, with half being Christians and the rest Muslims. Is a mixed city, with different religions coexistencing peacefully. Dominated by the Church of the Annunciation, the peaks of the numerous steeples and domes of the many churches, convents, chapels and schools of various denominations, plus the ringing of bells, add to its charm. Nazareth became famous as the site of the Annunciation and where the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary to announce the arrival of Jesus. It then became a Christian pilgrimage site along with the cities of Jerusalem and Bethlehem.
After the Nativity in Bethlehem and the trip to Egypt, the Holy Family returned to Nazareth where Jesus grew up and later preached in the synagogue at a time when the country was in turmoil and revolt. The town lay in ruins after the Muslims invaded in 636 AD and destroyed the city. It was restored by the Crusaders in the twelfth century. A century later the Saracens massacred the Christian population and demolished the churches of the Crusaders. In the seventeenth century a group of Franciscan friars were allowed to return to Nazareth. Since then churches, monasteries and schools have been established. A mosque was bult in 1814. In the last few decades, Nazareth has grown and expanded. Each year tens of thousands of pilgrims and visitors come to visit their holy places. .
