Museum of Romanticism

I was completely surprised when I encountered the Romanticism Museum, a little gem of a museum that’s still not widely known in Madrid. The Romanticism Museum houses an important collection of historical, decorative, and artistic objects centered around the daily life and customs of 19th century Spain, with special emphasis placed on the Romantic aesthetic of the day.
This museum owes its existence to Benigno de la Vaga-Inclán, a Marquis and philanthropist who lived during the second half of the 19th century and also founded the El Greco Museum in Toledo. In 1921, he donated part of his belongings to establish a stable collection open to the public. The institution was named the Romanticism Museum due to its goal of preserving the memory of Spanish Romanticism.

The newly-remodeled Romanticism Museum has recently celebrated its re-opening. After being closed for nine years and undergoing renovations for eight, the museum’s doors have finally been opened for the enjoyment of the public.
The vast collection of objects from the era are now arranged gallery-style and are highlighted by two essential visitation routes, one atmospheric and the other thematic. Both routes finish in a parlor where you can sit down to read, chat, or play with one of four interactive screens which provide information and games about the museum’s contents.
