The city of Foggia is situated in the center of the wide flat Tavoliere plain, near the Cathedral, according to the research done by Nando Roman, there was a slight depression formed by water (called a relative depression). In Latin, a depression of this kind was called Fovea (Trench), which later, when the city appeared, shortly after the year one thousand, and was pronounced Foggia. In this water fire ritual were held, so the shield of the city consists of three flames above the water.
