The Chiado Building, in the commercial and financial center of the city, houses the Municipal Museum of Coimbra, it's a nice red iron building which opened in 2001, although the old building dates from 1910. Its permanent exhibition contains an important collection of nineteenth and twentieth century Portuguese paintings, as well as ceramic figurines, silver, furniture and sculptures. There are 2 rooms for temporary exhibitions, such as the work of outstanding Portuguese artists like Graça Morais, Alvaro Siza and Gil Teixeira.
