A magical mass
This church, the oldest "black" church in the state of New York, is located one block from the famous Abyssinian. So on the one hand, it's easy to find, but on the other, the proximity to the Abyssinian may dampen the celebrations here a bit. It is NOT a show, it is an authentic church service, although we found that about half the congregation were tourists. The service was magical, and sent a chill down my spine. But if I have the chance to return to New York, I might look for a smaller church, for fewer tourists and a more authentic atmosphere.
