Mostar Cemetery
The Mostar cemetery is a very striking site. The first thing that impresses is its location right in the city center. You are walking down the street and suddenly notices a large "park" with trees but when you get closer you realize that it is a cemetery full of graves. Another amazing thing is that that all the graves have the same date, namely 1993. In this cemetery is buried all the citizens of Mostar who lost their lives during the war. The cemetery in Mostar is a kind of tribute to those who fell in the struggle, a kind of reminder of the most cruel war. When you approach there is a pervasive silence, not a single word, not a murmur.
The tombs are all beautifully maintained, many even have pictures, which shows that the people of the city come here often to visit the graves of family. Another thing that is surprising is that the cemetery is surrounded by modern buildings where cafes, bars and even restaurants can be found. Surprising because we are used to cemeteries that are somewhat removed from the city, even fenced and with trees that cover the inside. Here you find the complete opposite, the tombs are perfectly maintained and the cemetery occupies a privileged position, close to all to the city centre.
