Mezquita Rustem Pasha - Rüstem Paşa Cami

Encontrar esta mezquita es complicadillo, pero el esfuerzo merece la pena con creces pues tiene los azulejos más bonitos de todo Estambul. Se localiza en la zona del Gran Bazar, pero la dificultad en encontrarla radica en que se encuentra en el piso primero de uno de los edificios de las estrechas y bulliciosas callejuelas; hay que preguntar y guiarse por un mapa, y en la planta de calle del lúgubre edificio hay un cartel que lo indica. Hay que subir las escaleras del portal, y allí, en la amplia azotea del edificio, la encontraréis. La fachada exterior está compuesta por una galería con arcos que soporta la cúpula, y la puerta de entrada bajo un pórtico. Una vez descalzados, entramos y alucinamos con lo que vimos: Aparte de estar milagrosamente vacía de turistas, todas las paredes estaban revestidas con preciosos mosaicos y azulejos con motivos florales y geométricos (en la fachada también hay). Como su nombre indica, la mezquita fue construida para el gran visir Damat Rüstem Pachá, entre 1561 y 1563, habiendo sido diseñada por el arquitecto Mimar Sinan. Una visita muy recomendable, sin duda. Abre todos los días y la visita es gratuita.

La Mezquita del Pacha Rustem, es probablemente la mezquita más pequeña de Estambul, aunque también la más bonita. Si queréis contemplar este pequeño tesoro, tendréis que ir hasta la zona del Cuerno de Oro, concretamente al antiguo mercado del barrio de Eminönü. Dejamos el autocar junto a la muralla y el guía nos llevó por el bullicioso mercado, donde se venden artículos de todo tipo, luego se dirigió hasta unas escaleras, algo que nos pareció bastante extraño, pero justo allí tras los soportales estaba la mezquita. Fue construida en 1550 por orden del yerno del sultán Solimán el Magnífico, el gran visir Rustem Pacha, del que tomó su nombre. Sin duda lo que más destaca son sus preciosos azulejos en vivos colores representando tulipanes, margaritas, rosas, claveles, etc. Que decoran el interior de la mezquita.

Rüstem Pasha Camii es una de las mezquitas más bonitas que conozco y es muy probable que pase desapercibida en una visita a Estambul pues no es tan famosa como la Mezquita Azul o Santa Sofía (antes iglesia bizantina y ahora convertida en museo). Sin embargo, no sólo es obligada una visita, sino que también es un auténtico placer en una de esas tardes de verano en las que el calor agobia y el bullicio de las calles y los bazares de Estambul nos satura. en la primera visita que hicimos a Estambul, creo que en 1987, ni siquiera nos enteramos de que existía. La descubrimos gracias a un documental dedicado exclusivamente a ella y a su cerámica de Iznik, que utiliza una técnica única (ahora perdida) para crear determinados colores que hoy en día todavía no son capaces de reproducir. Cuando, hace dos años, volvimos a Estambul, teníamos el objetivo de visitarla para comprobar por nosotros mismos si realmente era tan especial como daban a entender en el documental. Con la información de que disponemos hoy en día (internet, guías ilustradas...) la localización no debería ser un problema, pero lo que sucede es que no es una mezquita tradicional, aislada del resto de los edificios... Se trata de una pequeña mezquita integrada totalmente en una calle comercial, que no está al nivel de la calle, sino en el primer piso, y se accede a ella por una puerta como podría ser la de una vivienda, bastante pequeña, que da paso a unas escaleras de piedra, estrechas... de manera que ningún turista entraría a menos que la busque expresamente. Además, cuando nosotros fuimos había un hombre en la puerta, lo cual puede hacer pensar que se trata de un local privado. Pues no: el hombre nos dio paso amablemente (sin pagar entrada, pues se trata de una mezquita de culto, no de un museo) y, cuando subimos arriba, descubrimos un pequeño remanso de paz: un espacio descubierto y una especie de pórtico cubierto por los que circula la brisa. El interior, la joya, una verdadera colección de cerámica, pues parece que el arquitecto hubiera querido experimentar con todo tipo de diseños y colores, aunque predominan los tulipanes (originarios de Anatolia y símbolo del imperio Otomano) y el color azul. Cada columna, cada paño de las paredes, es una muestra de la mencionada cerámica de Iznik. Pero, además, con las ventanas abiertas, la sensación es de varios grados menos que en la calle. Nosotros no nos conformamos con una visita, sino que repetíamos cuando estábamos por la zona para retener por más tiempo en la retina la belleza del lugar y disfrutar de la serenidad que emana en contraste con la calle. Allí mismo compramos unos pequeños azulejos-imán y un libro de imágenes de recuerdo. Pero además, nos regalaron un Corán de bolsillo en inglés. The interior, jewel, a true collection of ceramics, it seems that the architect had wanted to experiment with all kinds of designs and colors, but tulips (symbol originating in Anatolia and the Ottoman Empire) and blue predominate. Each column, each cloth walls, is an example of that Iznik ceramics. But also, with the windows open, the feeling is several degrees lower than on the street. Se llega a ella de varias maneras, pero quizás la mas fácil sea atravesando el Bazar de las especias. Entrando por la puerta que da al mar y buscando una de la otras dos salida. Si no has dado vueltas la de la derecha. En cualquier caso están cerquísima una de la otra y el minarete se ve en cuanto sales, al fondo de la calle. Está situada en un primer piso, en una terraza, con lo que solo se ve, en la calle, una placa junto a una puerta abierta que lleva a unas escaleras que suben... Intimida, pero merece muchísimo la pena. Sin duda una de las mas lejanas del circuito convencional de mezquitas y con ningún lujo que exhibir. Un lugar sin ninguna concesión al turista. Prohibida la entrada durante el rezo y una vez dentro impacta el silencio y el respeto que allí se respira. Una mezquita real en la que somos invitados y así, con respeto, debemos comportarnos. Un lugar inmejorable para hacer un alto, reflexivo, en el camino. A la salida, si se desea, te puedes llevar un ejemplar gratuito del Coran.

Me enamoré de esta pequeña joya perdida entre las callejuelas de Estambul. Merece la pena subir las cuestas para llegar a la puerta de esta mezquita, donde se puede escuchar a los niños de la escuela colindante recitar los versos del Corán. Sus paredes están repletas de azulejos y con un poco de suerte, la misma que tuve yo, si vas temprano no habrá nadie y alguno de los trabajadores te abrirá la puerta para que puedas verla y pasear incluso por la zona "prohibida", donde ellos rezan, y observar todo al detalle. Imperdible!!!

Não é fácil encontrar esta pequena mesquita de Istanbul cuja entrada fica muitas vezes escondida pelas bancas dos muitos vendedores que enchem a rua. Depois há que subir as escadas que levam ao terraço onde está a mesquita. Vale a ena o esforço da procura pois a mesquita é uma verdadeira pérola, um tesouro escondido e raramente visitado pelos turistas apressados. A sua característica mais notável está nos inúmeros azulejos de Iznik, com magníficos desenhos geométricos ou motivos florais que revestem o interior e o exterior.
