The oldest house in Manhattan
Morris-Jumel Mansion is the oldest house in Manhattan. It was the headquarters for General Washington in September and October 1776. After leaving Washington, the Morris-Jumel Mansion has played host to a succession of British military leaders and briefly served as an inn for weary travelers. It eventually returned to its role as country house, and that is just the beginning of this mansion's fascinating history that was built in 1765 on a hill.
