Free, fascinating history lesson about Mormons
This is a nice place to visit if you want to learn about Mormon history. The Mormon Battalion Historic Site provides free tours (about 40 minutes long) to the public that take visitors on an interactive tour of what it was like when a group of more than 400 Mormons who joined the US Army marched from Iowa to San Diego. The tour features videos, talking picture frames, and rooms that represent places the men stopped at during their journey. It's a family-friendly place, and at the end there is a booth where visitors can take black & white photos. Kids can also pan for "gold" in water, and keep two of their favorite pieces.
There's also a view deck where visitors can see some of Old Town San Diego. The people at the site are very bright and friendly and helpful. Highly recommended. Parking is available on the street and in lots, but can get crowded on the weekends.
