Bayonne is a city with charm and next to the border of France and Spain. It is is a city full of history and cultural mixtures, which has a magic that is difficult to explain. One of its jewels is the Cathedral of Santa Maria, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in the year 1998, but also there are many more monuments that are worth visiting. Everyone who comes to Bayonne should visit the walls. These are 3 different forts that have been built in the city over the centuries. The oldest is one in the ancient city. In the Lake of the walls there are many steps of entry, one of the loveliest is the Gate of Spain.
Maybe the best place in town to watch the walls is the neighborhood of Petit Bayonne, where you will find the addition of Mousserolles door, which has a suspension bridge. Another Bayonne monument worth visiting is the Bonnat Museum, which was constructed in the year 1901 and has real gems inside by artists such as Rubens, Van Dyck, Le Greco, Murillo, Goya and Géricault. There is a section of the museum that is dedicated to Egypt. More important monuments, the Basque Museum, which is in a sixteenth century house and has shown more than 2,000 works of art that make up the Basque identity. Besides these places, it is fantastic to see many anonymous houses that have a charm and breathtaking beauty. There is so much cultural richness in Bayonne to be visited by tourists.
