Bullfighting

Of course we were wrong to think that in Portugal there was no bullfighting tradition, the Monumental Plaza de Toros de Póvoa demonstrated that they do hold this sport as a tradition Unlike the Spanish in Portugal it is only a mere spectacle in which it is forbidden to kill the animals. Prior to the construction of this square (it is from the nineteenth century), bullfights were held inside the Fortress of Our Lady of the Conception. The current arena was opened in 1949, designed by Alfredo Coelho de Magalhaes. It has a capacity for 5,500 spectators, and since 1984 it is managed by the City Council.
