INDEPENDENCE WAR
This battle was fought on June 21, 1813, between the French troops escorting Joseph Bonaparte in his flight and a conglomerate of British, Spanish and Portuguese troops under the command of the Duke of Wellington. The Allied victory led to the final withdrawal of French troops from Spain (except Catalonia) and forced Napoleon to return the country's crown to Fernando VII, ending the Spanish War of Independence. In June 1911 the Spanish government applied for credit to erect a monument to this battle, placed in a square in Victoria. The city had a competition for the design and it was won by Gabriel
