Monterrico Beach

Monterrico Beach is the favorite beach of foreigners. There are early surprises because in Central America, one expects white sand beaches and blue sea, but the beach is black volcanic sand and with much of this swirling around, the Pacific water is not as clear as in other places. But it's a cute, quiet town with fishermen living in huts. they spend much of the day watching life from a hammock. It is the only town on the Pacific coast which is just starting to build a tourist infrastructure. There are a dozen hotels, from the cabins to the very cute cheap Tzabal Utz where you can stay for 5-30 euros per person per night.

You can spend only one day without sleeping in Tzabal Utz as you take advantage of the beautiful pool and the hotel for 5 euros. For backpackers, the best place is Johnny's place, with Johnny himself an old hippie. There you will find swimming pools and eight bungalows to share among friends, with private pool. There is also a turtle reserve where you can go to see a sea turtle which has waited 30 years to return and lay its eggs.
