Home to one of Italy's finest wines
Day one started by walking down from the hill top town of Montalcino, home to one of Italy's finest wines. Strolling through the vineyards of the kingdom of Brunello watching the workers busy tending to this valuable crop.
Initially route finding was a bit tough but with the help of Kompass map 2463 and some way marking in Google maps it is possible to find your way. First off follow the farm tracks to Casanova di Neri vineyard. Next head towards the railway line turning right and walking parallel to the railway line for 2kms until you find a bridge under the railway. Immediately afterwards ford the torrente Asso. After the crossing set a course for Castello di Ripa d'Orcia. The gravel track winds up hill past a series of homely Agriturismi, with honey colored stone walls and verdant gardens. The castle is an imposing landmark, although there is little point going to its gates, as it is closed to general public and guarded by a grumpy troll.
