Monasteries of Meteora

Excellent

For me, the monasteries in Meteora are one of the most spectacular places in the world ...it is beautiful and has really spectacular views. There are seven monasteries nestled around the mountains, most of them with monks but a few with nuns. At first, the monasteries were only accessible by ropes that the monks raised and lowered. I asked a monk how often they changed the ropes and the answer we received was "whenever the Lord wants," an answer that wasn't entirely reassuring! If you go there, it's best to spend the night in the village of Meteora since there are many places to sleep. If you're in a rental car, you can visit all the monasteries in one trip.

The place is spectacular and impressive but a bit hard to get to so make sure you have your GPS handy. You can't miss it if you're in Greece!

Impressive

Gran Meteoro is the largest monastery in Meteora, a valley near the town of Kalambaka. It can be reached by train from anywhere in the country. I came from Thessalonica and made an easy train transfer. You will be notified where to get off the train and you can just wait on the same platform. When you get to Kalambaka, it's best to hire a taxi to take you to Gran Meteoro, which is not very expensive. Then you can walk back down through all the monasteries. For those who don't know, Meteora is a valley full of completely vertical stones with monasteries carved into the zenith, like darts stuck in the ground.

It's impressive. If you are in Greece, its a must see.

To reach Kalambaka, you have to take a train from Athens, and after about 4 hours away arrive at the station of this city. Kalambaka is a small quiet town without much interest, but for the surprise that keeps us the huge gray rock mass that awaits behind. There are the Monasteries of Meteora, suspended on top of the rocks, seem to balance on them. To access them, there is a bus from the center of Kalambaka, and for 2 € upload top, the Great Meteor. From here you can visit all walk and go down again to Kalambaka, suitable only for people who like trekking and is in good shape. If not, you can see near the Great Meteor, and down again by bus. Inside, almost all are equal, Orthodox churches and spectacular views. The entrance to the monastery is 2 € each. Visited there in June, and you can see all the day minus 1, which is always closed. Are rotated, so there are always five open. Apart from the visited, there are many monasteries were visited, and others are in ruins. The first monks were hermits inhabited the area and lived in caves. Gradually monasteries were founded to protect Turks and Albanians. Monasteries were used during the Second World War to shelter from German troops, and as a result, a large number were destroyed. The site is the heritage of humanity and be missed if traveling to Greece.

We believe that Nature has carved these...

We believe that Nature has carved these phenomenal and majestic stone blocks to prove his power and his reign but that man, in his genius, reveled to prove him wrong by building lavish Orthodox monasteries at the top. And reach the Supreme spirituality is closer to heaven? Show God's love of men for him has no limits? Innaccessibles make these monasteries to preserve the contemplation before the monks sought in vain among men? See Meteora is attending a titanic battle is to feed a culture and a fabulous orthodox architecture is to find peace is to find the beauty, it is aware that Man is tiny to nature as there is great.

Breathless.

100% recomendado.
It is a magical place in Greece. The monasteries stand on the mountains and they give you a view of impact. To enter it is necessary to bring a blanket covering his legs (no matter which carried long pants, skirt is needed). Inside monasteries have some rooms that breathtaking. 100% recommended.

Located between the villages of Kastraki and Kalambaka, two peoples belonging to the prefecture of Trikala. There are several options to get here, from organized tours from Athens, as well as by train or bus. We arrived at the airport and drive Salnica reached the village of Kastraki. The path runs through Salnica to Kastraki Turnpike, one of many of which is Greece, but good will that crosses a dozen tunnels and offers scenic views over the mountains. The villages of Kastraki and Kalambaca, estn completely overturned tourism, both full of small hotels, houses and restaurants with planted fruit trees, as these locations come from different tours to visit the monasteries. Overnight in Guesthouse Papastathis, situated just outside Kastraki, five hundred meters to reach the first of the monasteries that you're on the road, the monastery of Agios Nikolaos. Nice house with planted fruit trees simptico run by a marriage, from their rooms overlooks the Roussanou monastery. The next day, following indications of one of the consulted blogs, visit the temple started ms away, which is also the most largest of the 6 monasteries that make up, Megalo Meteoro, complex with the idea of going down to the other monasteries . After making some photos between the two monasteries that are together, Megalo Meteoro and Varlaam, decided to leave the visit inside for the evening, because while we take pictures come over 12 buses to visit, and still were not nine in the morning. We continue the visit of the other monasteries, starting with the monastery of nuns, Roussanou, to follow the road that offers the best panormicas on various monasteries, with authorized parking areas and viewpoints. Following the road, the last of the monasteries we visited is that of Agia Trias, who seems to literally hanging over the mountain to the village of Kalambaka at his feet. There is a monastery ms, Agios Stefanos, at the end of the same road, but to be rebuilt almost completely lost some charm over previous. We opted for the visit of this to be the most ofreca that, since the rest are much more pequeos and with very little to see inside, justifies the visit of the various monasteries to see the different perspectives on neighboring monasteries. We spent the day quietly by the various monasteries and viewpoints, resting and taking photographs, with all this, we were not more than six hours, the place deserves to go slow, be aware that the spectacular are the most views interiors, grab map and plans to visit all the viewpoints. The map will conseguirs in the same hotel, or the information office of Kastraki or Kalambaka. In short, very good experience visit the monasteries of Meteora, and sometimes as usual, here you will not leave disappointed the high expectations about the place.

I visited the monasteries of Meteora long ago and I keep a wonderful memory. What about this extraordinary place? A real feast for the eyes. The mountains seem to have fallen from the sky, hence the name so found "Meteora".

Despite the difficulties of the trip, the trip is worth it

Ideal place to meditate and appreciate the grandeur of nature at its fair value. It is a place that tells through centuries of stories, this relationship of meditation of nature by men. Despite the difficulties of the trip, the trip is worth it.
