Monasteries of Bucovina

The Bucovina region is in northern Romania, near the border with Moldova. It is famous for its beautiful monasteries, whose outer walls are fully covered with frescoes. The paintings are from the medieval period, and the colors have been exceptionally well preserved over time. The most famous are those of Voronet, Sucevita, Moldovita, Probota and Humor. You can go there by public transport but it is much easier if you have a car. Most monastries were built in the fifteenth or sixteenth century. The monasteries of Bucovina are now registered UNESCO world heritage sites. There was a major renovation

And conservation project which took place in 2000 to restore the wonderful frescoes and paintings.
