Irukina
Recommended experience
Staying in Shirakawa-go is a highly recommended experience, even more so if you stay in one of the original houses with a Gassho-zukuri style roof, built so that snow does not accumulate on the roof. There are several to choose from and I'll tell you about the one I went to. It was called Nodaniya (number 6 in the town plan) and has a lovely view over a rice field and mountains. To add to its charm, at the entrance there is a beautiful mill. The room, like in all this type of accommodation is tatami (traditional japanese style). Yukata is supplied and they serve you tea and a sweet. The bathroom (shared as it is a family) is in traditional wooden tub hinoki (Japanese cypress wood).
