Ouro Preto possui mais de 300 minas mapeadas e algumas delas são abertas à visitação. A mais bonita é a Mina Jeje, datada do século 18. Dela, foram extraídas centenas de quilos de ouro a um custo alto. Os escravos que trabalhavam nas minas não passavam dos 25 anos. Morriam com os pulmões petrificados em poucos anos de trabalho. As condições eram péssimas. A visita à Mina Jeje custa 15 reais e dura cerca de 30 minutos, dependendo do seu interesse, pois o guia se mostra bem disponível para responder qualquer pergunta e é bastante detalhista nas respostas. Para entrar, é preciso colocar um capacete, pois o corredor que dá acesso ao centro da mina se estreita em algumas partes e é preciso andar inclinado.
