Excursion to see archaeological sites

A little more than 65 km from Fez, is Meknes, the spiritual capital of Morocco. You can get there by train from Fez Station, which run every few minutes and the travel time is 45 min. The fare and change are about 4 €. You can go to the mosque , visit some of its mausoleums, the palace, walk around the market or go out and look for its souk, which is local and not with many tourists or enjoy a tasty burger made of camel in your place, you will see the sign with a camel face one of the butchers markets. It is exquisite, a bit spicy but very good and different. From there you can take a taxi (it should not be more than 20 to 25 € for a half day including Moulay Idriss Volubilis ) and go to Volubilis (an old Roman city, with one of the best preserved archaeological sites in the zone of North Africa and a Heritage Site by Unesco, the entrance fee is 3 €.

A little over 5 km away we can arrive to Mulay Idris, the holy city, and they say go 5 times to the tomb of Moulay Idris (founder of Fez and Meknes) which equals going on pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca. Of course some guy approaches you to tell the history of the city.He will will tell stories that are interesting and you will go to the highlands to admire an incredible and mystical panoramic view. The price of this " excursion "is what each sees fit.

Created near an ancient Roman city

Miknas (or Meknes) in Morocco, is 2 hours by train from Rabat (the capital of Morocco) and 1 hour from Fes. It was one of the Moroccan imperial cities and was the capital of Morocco in the XVII century, under the Moulay Ismail dynasty. Then the capital transferred to Rabat again. Miknas has about 1 million inhabitants. I didn't sleep there so can't recommend hotels, but generally in Morocco, cheap hotels are in old downtown buildings that have been renewed a little and become backpacker rooms, newer parts of cities offer more modern options like luxurious pools, air and European comfort. The city was created near an ancient Roman city Volubilis, which you can visit from Miknas by a bus to Moulay Idris, or by sharing a large taxi to the ruin.

Miknas is famous for its doors, which were the gates to the medina, guarded and closed, but today they are open 24 hours. Some, such as Bab Mansour, are still very beautiful. As the ancient city is more petite than Fez, Miknas can appear more modern. To continue your trip take a train/bus to Fez or Rabat.
