Mértola Castle, Alentejo, Portugal
During our Mértola and Alentejo road trip we visited a medieval castle that began construction in the VIII century and was expanded in later times. It's built inside the old Roman walled city of Visigothic, initiated by the Phoenicians, on the banks of the Guadiana River and on top of a hill. The Castle, and its important strategic position in southern Portugal, began to decline/lose value after new discoveries and overseas conquests. Today it's a National Monument that is being restored.
